PLA and IDLO Join Forces to Expand Labour Justice for Vulnerable Workers in Uganda
Platform for Labour Action (PLA), with support from the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) and funding from the Embassy of Sweden in Uganda, is implementing a new project to strengthen access to labour justice for poor, vulnerable and marginalised workers in Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono. The project runs from 1st August 2026 to 31st July 2028.
The Challenge
Workers in Uganda's informal economy continue to face persistent labour rights violations, including non-payment of wages, unfair dismissal, unsafe working conditions, discrimination, violence and harassment at work.
Our Approach
This project puts workers at the centre of labour justice by:
- Empowering them with knowledge of their rights
- Expanding access to legal aid and Alternative Dispute Resolution
- Strengthening the capacity and responsiveness of labour justice actors
Expected Results (2026 to 2028)
- 3,900 workers directly supported, with particular attention to women, youth, migrant workers and others in vulnerable employment
- 1,200 workers provided with legal aid and dispute resolution support
- 2,700 workers reached through labour rights awareness initiatives
- Up to 500,000 people reached through radio and social media campaigns
- 35 community level structures and worker representatives strengthened
- 20 labour officers trained to deliver more accessible, responsive and quality labour justice services
Workers will also be given opportunities to raise concerns, provide feedback and engage labour justice actors on improving service delivery. The project takes a people centred and inclusive approach, recognising the barriers faced by women and other workers in precarious employment.
Ultimately, the project seeks to contribute to a labour justice system where workers are informed about their rights, able to seek remedies when those rights are violated, and supported by responsive and accountable justice institutions.
