Opolot William, a 44 year old resident of Adyel Kasubi, Lira Municipality worked as a supervisor at an Electric Company since 2013 and had salary arrears amounting to 3,773,000 shillings.
He and a group of 10 colleagues before coming to PLA hired a private lawyer at a fee of 1,000,000 shillings to handle their issue of non-payment. The process got costly along the way as the lawyer kept demanding for more money. They were then advised by a past PLA client to seek legal aid at PLA and in April 2018, a file was opened.
The employer was called for mediation and he agreed to pay the money in 2 installments. The first installment was paid in November 2018 and the second in January 2019.
“I used part of the money to pay off debts that had accumulated and school fees for my children. I also bought a second hand motorcycle at 900,000 shillings which I use for transport. I plan to use the balance to plant 500 pine trees in Kole to secure the future. I am very grateful to PLA for enabling me access justice and urge them to continue with the good work because many workers lack legal representation.” Opolot William
